It’s tough being broke and facing retirement. The cost of living keeps rising. Energy is soaring. Who knows, maybe the city will start charging for the right to sleep on top of a grate with warm air flowing up through it — that is, of course, as long as there’s not a jolt of electricity flowing through it as well.
For those who live in New York City, there’s an opportunity to get some hands-on training for a job. The program is called Senior Employment Services. Trainees are even paid the minimum wage of $6.75 while in the program. Even better, 85% of those are placed into part- or full-time jobs after completing the program.
There’s hope, my friends, despite the fact that CEOs can walk away with multi-million dollar golden parachutes for less than a year or two’s work.
Ms. Marullo and Mr. Evans were among 40 people attending classes on a recent morning at the Lower Manhattan headquarters of the New York City Department for the Aging, which runs a job-training center for low- and moderate-income city residents 55 and older.
The center, which was established in 1991 to house a computer training course, later added courses focusing on business operations and customer service. In recent years, nearly 1,000 people a year have taken a course at the center, generally attending four hours each weekday for about 10 weeks, said Maria Serrano, director of senior employment services at the Department for the Aging.
