on Jul 31st, 2007The Light Fades on Director Ingmar Bergman
Having taught undergraduate film at Harvard, it was sad to read that film director Ingmar Bergman died. The final exam in Contemporary Cinema involved analyzing Bergman’s masterpiece, Persona. The days of movies being made based on the artistic sensibility of one man’s life are pretty much over. Today it’s all about hustling merchandise and special effects. The idea of letting the camera run on one person’s face for longer than two seconds is almost archaic. Thankfully his films have been preserved. It’s a shame they can only be seen on the big screen in limited theaters though. Just one more thing to add to the nostalgic heap.
