When you’re young, people are dying every day but somehow it all escapes your attention. The idea of reading obituaries to see if you know anyone is about as familiar as the name of an adult diaper. The older you get, though, the more it becomes obvious that life takes its toll on people in unpredictable ways. Suddenly driving down the road can get interrupted by a driver coming the other way who drifts into your lane blacking out the future.
TV talk show host and entrepreneur Merv Griffin is suffering from prostate cancer. Things have apparently taken a turn for the worse. The roadside memorial won’t be necessary, but perhaps a nod to the television set is in order. He did after all entertain millions for years. Here’s to you, Merv, best of luck. It didn’t last forever, but it was better than most.
