Some call it “aging in place,” some call it staying put, some just cuss and say, “ain’t no fricking way you’re gonna put me in one of those nursing homes or assisted living facilities!!” Baby Boomers are waking up to the crappy nature of places that isolate seniors in old age. Honestly, who the hell wants to be around people who are all on the verge of checking out. Imagine the jungle with only one animal..kinda boring. Professionals might call it a “mixed community,” but those who have experienced the smell of a nursing home call it “get me the hell out of here!”
Like all good movements, there’s a moment when you realize if you don’t take matters into your hands, the stereotypes will take over and you’ll end as another soul sitting in a wheelchair wishing you were fishing in heaven sooner than later. There’s a line between independence versus dependence that governs most of these living situations. Make sure you’re on the independent side when deciding your future fate. This movement needs a provocative name. Let’s name it!
