I was just reading a book on how to teach fluency in reading. When you’re a tyke in grade school, the thought of comprehending HOW you to read is about as relevant as asking a dragon how he makes all that fire coming out of his mouth. As an adult, though, the question becomes far more intriguing. How did I go from being illiterate to reading out loud to finally reading silently? It was a mystery until I realized early culture revolved around oral storytelling. The scarcity of books also made it necessary to have one person read the book while everyone else listened.

If you were one of those kids who dreaded being called upon by your teacher to take your turn reading out loud, then perhaps your parents never read to you as a child. Don’t make the same mistake with your late-in-life kids or grandkids! Sit your butt down in a big ol comfy chair, gather the tykes around, and read, read, read!

Prison is a terrible place to learn how to read….Oh, and children’s author Madeleine L’Engle died. Maybe picking up one of her books wouldn’t be a bad start for your new career as a reader.
