on Oct 8th, 2007Ohio Seniors Eligible For Property Tax Exemption Apply Now

Good news for Ohio senior citizens! The Ohio Department of Taxation now allows seniors to apply for a property tax reduction under the Homestead Exemption. The exemption “will allow all eligible homeowners, regardless of income, to shield $25,000 of the market value of their home from property taxes. To be eligible, a property owner must be 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled. In addition, the surviving spouse of a qualified homeowner may be eligible if the survivor is age 59 or older. Previously, the tax break was available only to individuals in these categories with incomes of less than $26,200 per year.”

New Ohio law helps save home-owning seniors money

Update on deadline: “Senior citizen and disabled homeowners who were eligible for the homestead exemption in 2007 and missed the Oct. 1 deadline can still receive the tax savings by applying next year. The window for applications opens Jan. 2, 2008 and closes June 8, 2008. Apply with your local county auditor. Eligible homeowners who apply at that time can be approved for the homestead exemption for tax year 2008 (which affects taxes paid in 2009) and future years, and also for a reduction in taxes for the prior tax year of 2007 (to be credited later in 2008).”
